The volunteers in Niger, as one of them put it, even if they come there with no knowledge at all, they’re way ahead of everybody else because the people in Niger all have minus knowledge, [laughs] as they put it. There’s absolutely nothing there; they’re starting from scratch. There’s a greater satisfaction, working in this really bush situation where you can see where anything you do is progress. But, in a way, Zaria’s more of a challenge. It demands a certain level of competence, because we are teaching in fairly good schools and there’s a certain amount of challenge just in being a good teacher.
